After which we will delve into the benefits of mind mapping and describe a variety of uses for mind maps. We will begin our exploration by defining the process of mind mapping. This exploration will provide you with a visual comparison of the features of each tool to help you figure out whether or not it might be suitable for your purposes. What follows is a beginner’s overview of the principles behind mind mapping.Īlong the way, we will also explore several mind mapping examples using a variety of mind mapping software programs. Our methods for organizing information are changing dramatically, and visual mapping is quietly becoming a revolutionary tool that’s keeping us organized, productive, and focused. There are now a plethora of visual mapping software applications available on all platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Visual mapping has slowly crept into mainstream awareness over a period of about 10 years. It’s instead evolving into a visual information management tool that’s transforming the way we think, work, and develop our visual thinking capacity. These days though, mind mapping isn’t just about creating a map. It is now on the brink of becoming a mainstream tool used by academics, students, business professionals and many other individuals to manage, organize and reimagine information in a new and highly structured way. Mind mapping has come a long way since the early days when Tony Buzan first introduced it to the world. If anything, these studies have highlighted that our capacity to think effectively and quickly is very closely tied to our imagination and our ability to create associations between various information chunks. The past 20 years have brought us incredible insights into the human mind and our limitless capacity to think, comprehend and store vast reserves of information. OPML, import into OmniOutliner, and paste directly into my Project Folder in OmniFocus. Initially I was assigning check boxes, and Start/Due Dates to my Action & Focus items, but have since started doing the following: (Concepts which are too far out to be completed in a timely fashion) (Those things like links, photos, notes and such.the non-task related essentials) Once I have all my branches down I begin another map and begin prioritizing them into four categories: Get all the ideas down in novamind (mindmapping is perfect for this sort of dynamic idea capturing-you envision the entire landscape at a glance) I'm relatively new to GTD, and can't decide which workflow I like most between Things and OmniFocus. I typcially use novamind 4 and either Things or OmniFocus. The bottom line is that NovaMind looks like it was designed by and for more creative types, while MindManager is more businesslike in appearance. That's really valuable to me, in the type of work I do. What I especially value is the ability to link my maps to individual Outlook e-mails. On the other hand, in terms of MS Office integration, I like MindManager a little better. I like the presentation mode of NovaMind better than MindManager. It's nice, but you can do the same thing in MindManager by applying a map style, and then clicking the undo button. NovaMind 4 offers something called "live formatting," where hovering over a map style causes your map to momentarily take on those qualities. ![]() The only way I know how to do this in MindManager is to color each connector manually.īoth programs are fairly similar in their use of Ribbon toolbars. That increases visual interest and memorability of your maps. It automatically colors the connector lines between the central and first level topics in a different color. Right out of the box, however, NovaMind enables you to create more colorful maps. I'm a big fan of MindManager, because I've been a user of it for years. ![]()
